The Start of Salt Lake Mattress & Manufacturing Co.

A few decades after the pioneers settled in the Salt Lake area, mattresses were being produced by Salt Lake Mattress & Mfg. Company. The first mattresses were stuffed with horse hair, shredded rags, moss, cotton, feathers, and kapok. The mattresses were small, thin ancestors of today’s luxurious products.

THE FOUNDER: 
FREDRICK EBERHARDT

Fredrick Eberhardt incorporated the business in 1892, four years before Utah became the 45th state in the country. He was the eighth of 11 children born to German immigrants who settled in Wisconsin. Eberhardt was lured to Utah by the mining boom but soon abandoned his dreams of “getting rich quick” and fell back on furniture making, a craft he had honed in his youth. He created a wire-making operation to be used in his products. He made springs, link springs, and other natural raw materials and created the Sunset brand of bedding the company continues to make today.

GROWING THE BUSINESS

Fredrick’s son, Alexander, grew the business, and in the early 1930s was instrumental in obtaining Serta Mattress stock and the franchise to make Serta Mattress products for the intermountain west’s growing population. Alexander’s sons, John and James, successfully introduced various types of foam cushioning into the product specifications and with astute marketing and advertising, substantially grew their business into the 1980s.

In 1985 the company was sold to the Crowther family where it continues to provide Serta, Restonic, and Sunset brand bedding which provide promotional products as well as high-end luxurious bedding. 

The company is dedicated to its customers and consumers. For over 140 years it has been creating comfortable sleeping surfaces to enhance sleep for millions.
